Gage Climbs the Charts

Russell Gage had a great camp at LSU.  He is now ranked #27 in the state by The Times-Picayune

Gage emerges among headliners

Call it mission accomplished for Redemptorist's rising senior Russell Gage.

Gage says he would consider a LSU greyshirt opportunity

Gage may have been among the lesser known prospects entering LSU's football camp last week but certainly didn't depart in that manner.

At certain times of the camp, primarily in breaks before lunch or at the end of a day, it was common to see Gage and his father holding court with either LSU Head Coach Les Miles, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron or defensive backs coach Corey Raymond.

While none of those discussions have led to a scholarship offer since the camp's conclusion last Wednesday all the positive feedback the LSU coaches have heaped on Gage certainly helped put 6-foot, 175-pounder in a much different light.

"I came as not a real big name," said Gage, whose only offer is from Tulane. "I told myself I had to come in and work real hard if I wanted to get myself out there. I knew I had the potential."

The first indication that Gage, a two-way starter at Redemptorist the past two seasons, was on to something was Monday morning.

That's when Gage was asked to hang around for what coaches referred to as an "opportunity group" where a handful of prospects were handpicked to run a series of plays in 7-on-7 competition.

This is the same group that featured eventual LSU quarterback commitment Brandon Harris of Parkway along with other Tiger commitments in tight end Jacory Washington of Westlake on offense and Edward Paris of Mansfield, Texas, Chris Hardeman of Houston and John Battle IV of Hallandale, Fla. were on defense.

St. Augustine's Leonard Fournette, John Curtis' Malachi Dupre and Barbe's Trey Quinn were also part of the offensive firepower with Tony Brown of Beaumont-Ozen on defense.

"It was a good opportunity to go with those guys," Gage said.

One of Gage's first assignments came against LSU target Speedy Noil of Karr followed by a matchup with fellow LSU target Saeed Blacknall of Manapalan, N.J.

"That was pretty nice," Gage said. "They're both top prospects in the nation. It was a great opportunity. I felt like I held my own."

Gage didn't allow all the positive talk to go straight to this head. He continued working hard under the guidance of Raymond and some at wide receiver with Adam Henry, and remained on hand for all four days of the camp.

"I probably got the most feedback from working at DB," Gage said. "I worked there the longest and it's a lot harder to guard receivers because they know where they're going. DB is probably the hardest position on the field. I got some good feedback at receiver, but I just felt like they were more excited for me at DB."

Before taking part in LSU's camp Gage said in addition to the offer from Tulane he received interest from Southern Mississippi and Ole Miss. Since his return home he's heard from Texas and talked to a coach from Baylor.

Gage characterized all of his talks with LSU's coaches as upbeat but realizes that a numbers crunch may prohibit the hometown Tigers from being able to extend an offer in this year's class.

"I don't know exactly what they're thinking," Gage said. "They liked what they saw. They were pretty impressed with what I did. I feel like I've done enough to maybe get an offer. There are other schools out there that are interested. Maybe LSU's not the place for me. It's all up to what the coaches think and maybe LSU could be where I belong."

Gage said the possibility of a grayshirt or delaying his entry into college by a semester at LSU hasn't been a topic of conversation yet with LSU's coaches.

"I think I would consider it," Gage said. "But at the same time, if I had a full scholarship from another school and they wanted me instead of sitting out with a grayshirt, and if it's a better chance for me, I would be to go that other school. I feel personally that I performed well enough to get an offer from LSU. It's all on the coaching staff."

Gage capped off his successful week at LSU with another appearance at the Charles McClendon Practice Field, taking part in Saturday's 7-on-7 tournament with the hand-picked Louisiana Bootleggers team that didn't advance out of pool play with a 3-1 record.

Gage was teamed with Fournette and recent East St. John junior defensive back Xavier Lewis, who garnered an LSU offer last week.

"It was a great opportunity to play with some talented guys," Gage said. "It's amazing that Leonard Fournette's that good. We didn't practice beforehand so if we would have been able to practice and be more organized I think we would have won it all."
